The Last Surgeon A Novel Michael Palmer Books

"The Last Surgeon" is the second Dr. Michael Palmer novel I have read this summer. I enjoyed the first one ("Resistant") so I immediately purchased this novel. Unfortunately I wasn't as impressed with the characters or the overall pace.

Dr. Nick Garrity is surgeon suffering from PTSD as a consequence from his honorable service the United States on a mission in the Middle East and the suspicious disappearance of a fellow soldier.

Dr. Garrity is mysteriously linked to a beautiful nurse who is searching for the person who responsible for killing her sister. Garrity and nurse Jillian, along with several other characters, are trying to stay ahead of a serial killer while putting their own lives at risk.

I won't post spoilers, but if you read the back of the novel it gives a lot of information. I would have enjoyed this novel if there were less characters and more action throughout the entire story.

I will order another Dr. Michael Palmer novel. Maybe the third time will be the charm?

The Last Surgeon A Novel Michael Palmer Books Reviews

Anyone liking a fast-paced murder thriller will enjoy this book. i wished I were a slower reader so the book would've lasted longer! Michael Palmer never disappoints.
I like the beginnings of Michael Palmer's books. The ideas are really good and the stories are riveting -- until about 3/4of the way through when some of the events that are happening to the "good guys" get so far-fetched that I found I didn't care what happened next. I will probably not read another Michael Palmer book although I like his ideas and subject matter and his main characters.
Really good book. It is entertaining.
Palmer is great at writing suspenseful books. Wish he was still here writing. Plan to read all of his books. Great political thriller.
When does national security trump an American citizen's right to live? Michael Palmer ponders this question in this engrossing thriller featuring the murders of medical personnel across the country. So expertly are these killings carried out, that no one knows a skilled serial killer is at work, nor even suspect why.

The killer, a cruel, vain and throughly professional hitman, prides himself on his varied and variable technique which renders his work untraceable-"non-murders" he calls them. But killers are humans and humans do make mistakes and his extermination of a young nurse in Charlotte sets into motion a new chain of events. Dr. Nick Garrity, a shell-shocked trauma surgeon returned from Afghanistan is recruited by Jillian Coates, a DC area nurse bent on learning why her sister Belle was killed, and why it was made to look like a suicide. From such humble beginnings the best laid plans unravel and the true meaning of Belle's death and those of some of her colleagues is revealed.

This is an exciting tale, even though some of the characters are a bit cartoonish, a trait Palmer apparently recognizes with a comic book inspired subplot, that is quite ingenious. So hold onto your seat when you pick up this thriller, it's going to be quite a ride.
Really a good book! A typical Michael Palmer novel that keeps you turning pages until the end, Filled with suspense and drama.
The book is a page turning read. The characters are interesting and educating along the way. A couple of twists keep you turning the page in the fact finding adventure of the lead character. Characters are easy to visualize as well as identify with if you have had similar medical experiences in the hospital. The elitest attitude of some doctors can be recognized by all but the family dynamics can also be understood. Keeps you coming back to see just what new turn will happen in the family of smart and dysfunctional family. I feel this is more a mystery/doctor detective story in a medical setting vs a medical thriller. A book most can relate to and identify with. Will look for more of Michael Palmer's books you can clearly see in his writing the understanding and trials of dealing with asperger'sThe Second Opinion
