I read this book before, about a year ago, and me and my sister were talking about it, so I decided to read it again. So I bought it on here (the first time it was from the library.) And I loved it! I'm glad I forgot most of the plot, because it being a mystery, I wouldn't like to know everything that happens. So it's about a 12-almost-13-year old girl name Bethany who lives in Pennsylvania. Then out of nowhere her mom starts crying all the time, and then they drive to Illinois and drop Bethany off at an aunt's house, who she didn't even know existed!!
Then all this weird stuff starts happening and people look shocked and say she looks exactly like Elizabeth. She has no idea who Elizabeth is, or what happened to her. What follows is how she finds out who she is and uncovers the secrets of the past. You totally have to read it to find out the rest!!!
I would recommend this to ages 10-15 because I'm 13 and I really liked it, and all of my friends are in the age range of 12-15 and all of them would love it (except for a couple who are guys and obviously wouldn't like it lol). Also a few of my friends have sisters who are nine or ten and they would probably like it to.
So this is a great book, and you should really get it!! I got it around 12 pm yesterday, and now it's 9 pm the next day and I'm done. Oh and if you like this book you should check out Wendy Mass's books or Kate messner' s. They are really good.
I hope this helped you in any way :)

My son and I are reading this book together as a part of his 8th grade Family Read In event. I just wanted us to read a book together and so I didn't really care what we read. But I am so glad it was "Double Identity". The book is a quick, entertaining read and I enjoyed it quite a lot. I love the Young Adult genre and this may have been written just a tad younger than what I usually enjoy but I found it to be compelling and intriguing. We know right away that there is a huge secret in Bethany's family. Her parents are older than her friend's parents. They are driving away from home, leaving behind everything, in a parade of tears. She is dropped off to live with an "Aunt" she has never known existed. Her phone, her mom's and her dad's phones are all inactivated.
As Bethany gets to know Myrlie, she also becomes acquainted with the town where her parent's once lived. Everywhere she goes, people stop and stare. "But she looks so much like...", "Its like seeing a ghost". Who does Bethany look like? What happened to her? What secret are her parent's hiding? Bethany's love for her parents doesn't waver despite all the questions and uncertainties in her head. Her desperate attempts at contact with her mom and dad are sad and almost painful to see unfold. I had plenty of guess about what the secret is. You THINK you know the secret but later on an even bigger one is revealed. This truly is a well written mystery.
The only complaint I have is the story with the villain. The wrap up involving this third party was too out of the blue and all the pieces were tied far too neatly to be believable. To think that the secret was what it was, and that there would be no consequences from that...no fallout...was ridiculous. I know the book is for younger readers but even they are smart enough to know that the ending is too simplistic. Still a fantastic and fun quick read. I do recommend it.
I have spent the last four years reading with my granddaughter as a way to inspire her to enjoy books (we aren't quite there yet) and to motivate her to read the required number of books for her classes...first in the reading programs in school which would give quizzes and points to reach a goal, and now, in Junior High level, to read a variety of genre. I had a difficult time finding a science-fiction book for us to read that didn't incorporate fantasy or go on with endless sequels. Then I happened to come across Margaret Peterson Haddix's books, which offered more than one choice. Being a senior citizen, this book presented a plot that piqued my curiosity. I read it to make sure it would be an apt possibility for my granddaughter. I wasn't sure if it would interest her since she is only 13, but when given a choice of the books I felt suitable, even though I was surprised, she chose this book. We both enjoyed it, although I think I probably got more from it than she did since she could more easily identify with the younger Amelia and Anny Beth, while I could empathize with both the aged characters and the un-aged. I believe it is a well written book that introduces scientific knowledge (telomeres) with the delightful speculation of science fiction and leads the reader to thinking differently about the subject of age and staying young or even of immortality...rather like "Tuck Everlasting."
Eighty-five years ago Melly and Anny Beth were old women participating in a highly secret research study that reversed the aging process. However, the directors of Project Turnabout couldn't halt thee reversal, and the women have unaged back into teenagers. Soon. they will become so young that they will no longer care for themselves. Even worse, a reporter's interest in Melly is threatening to destroy the privacy that the teens alone still value in the publicity-mad culture of the year 2085. The suspense is unflagging as the two flee from unwanted exposure and search for a way to live out the rest of their days.
The futuristic setting, including the consensual media circus of daily life, is scarily believable. The girls are well drawn, distinct characters, their teenaged selves logical extensions of their adult personas with one important difference Melly and Anny Beth have learned from the mistakes of their "first lives" and accomplished more the second time around. The novel ends with the suggestion that longer life might be a blessing, an unusual perspective in science fiction and fantasy for young people, where extreme longevity is often depicted as a burden. Recommend this one to fans of Michael Crichton and Robin Cook, or pair it with Natalie Babbitt's Tuck Everlasting (Farrar, 1975) for a thoughtful discussion about human life and human potential.
