I have read most of the Sandilands series and enjoyed them. However, Not My Blood is one of the darkest and most distasteful books I have ever read. (I don't read gore.) But there are other problems. Joe's flirtation with Dorcas is unappealing, and the dialog is terrible. Instead of conversing, these characters orate. Even in moments of crisis, they manage to pull out a classical reference (and the Charon reference is overdone). I understand that Cleverly wants to have authentic 1930s dialog, but there's just too much of it, and it slows everything to a crawl. Put all that aside, and there is the convoluted plot. Early on, it's obvious where the author is taking us. Even so, I had no idea that it would be this dark.***Spoiler Alert*** The victims in this book are children.

Excellent all around. Great mystery which is well told. Also contains several well developed and very believable characters. Looking forward to reading Sandilands again.
Very clever plotting. Covers popular ideas of the times (An d probably still today) that people don't talk about openly.
Highly recommended. Well written and hard to put down. Sandilands is a believable and admirable protagonist who is intelligent and makes you cheer for him.
I liked the protagonist ,Joe Sandilands ,he epitomizes the characteristics of a true hero. Gosling, is another likable addition. The author 'cleverly' interweaves a plot of unmentionable crimes with interesting characters. A good read, I recommend it.
I found this a fascinating story with so much woven into it, a real page-turner, and I sat with it until I'd finished it.
Couldn't put it down.
The characterisations are excellent, I felt completely at home with the characters. Joe Sandilands is very well drawn, and
the language appropriate, the settings vivid and clear.
I am now going to get more books by this author - in fact I've put some on hold in our local library, and I shall buy
others.
I so enjoy ms Cleverlys work. This book is smart without being pretentious, full of life and the times of Pre-war England, as eugenics is embraced by the world, and the resultant deaths of the poor, defective, and lower classes make sense to those in power. A work that foretells of the arrogance of power and the impotence of ignorance. A small amount of humor and romance run like a thread throughout. The writing is excellent, and the plotting, while not the sort that offers a surprise at every turn, is still tight and verbally satisfying,
i enjoy this series a lot and read about one a year. That being said I was looking foreward to this one and although it started out well I think it got bogged down with unnecessary details which made me question if I should continue it. I'm glad I did but it could have been shorter. The boy who Joe thought might be his son starts out as a very important character in the beginning but pretty much disappears in importance by the end. All in all an uneven book with its ups and downs but still worth reading.
