This novel describes the heroic stand taken by several hundred Armenians facing genocide by the Turks in 1915. As massacres destroyed neighboring Armenian Christian communities, the residents of several villages withdrew to a mountain known as Musa Dagh and held off repeated assaults by Turkish soldiers and armed thugs. The novel closely follows the actual events but makes use of fictional characters, and still makes for very vivid reading seventy years after it was published. The author, Franz Werfel, was a German Jew and understood that Hitler was already taking steps to follow the Turkish example, and many of the methods used against the Armenians were exactly the same as those taken by the Nazis shortly after the novel was published.
The book is particularly relevant now when the Daesh fanatics are committing genocide against Chrstians, Yazidis, Druze and Shia communities in the very same regions of Syria where the Turks committed their atrocities a century ago. Perhaps if the world had long ago faced up to the horrors depicted in this novel, the example set by Turkey would not have been repeatedly emulated.

I liked this book about the armenian genocide. The Armenians who lives near Musa Dugh (Moses Mountain) knew what was coming. These people were blessed by many things to resist and survive the genocide. There is a lot in this book. I enjoy the battle scenes and stories of volunteer scouting actions. Over 4200 Armenians were saved by a French warship.
This is a wonderful account of the heroic folks near Musa Dagh who resisted the Turkish genocide of Armenians and found rescue. It is a shame that the Turkish lobby (millions strong, since all Turkish kids are taught from revisionist history books these days, and will fight to the teeth to deny the genocide committed by their forefathers) prevents this story from being made into a film. I bought this book from an antiquarian and was thrilled to hear that many people are searching for it so that they can pass along the story to students and children of all nations. The truth of the heroism of the Armenians of Asia Minor begs to be shared. God bless Werfel for following his calling in sharing it.
I cant begin to explain how much I enjoyed reading this book. I believe that every Armenian must pick up a copy to remind them why they are still alive. It is because of bravery and courage of those Armenians who fought back and those righteous and honorable Turks who helped them Agha Rifaat Bereket, Djelal (Celal) Bey, and old Turkoman who took in Haik and Stephan). An excellent work written by Franz Werfel

This book about the genocide of Armenians is long but very interesting. It is especially relevant to how people are people are treated today that have beliefs different from those who are in charge.
This is a very important book and I'm very glad I read it! I had heard that this book was the inspiration for the Warsaw Ghetto uprising that took place in 1942. In addition to learning about an historical event, the book demonstrates how differently writers handled sensitive situations 100 years ago. While reading the book, I took out a map of Turkey and Syria to see the locations being described. The insanity going on in Syria today seems like an echo of some of the things that took place there 100 years ago.
This is one of the greatest novels, though pretty much unsung, I've read in my 6-plus decades of reading a fairly good number of masterworks. I'd rather read the again than War and Peace. It's a greater achievement in my book.
