Does having the courage of your ambition inevitably mean losing your soul? Natalie Saladay is back in Hollywood, and now she wants it all The power to make good movies. The love of a good man. And she’ll risk just about anything in order to “give good Hollywood.” In this satirical romance novel of Hollywood, unabashedly ambitious, recently divorced Natalie Saladay is a studio “reader” whose job is to cull through scripts and books in search of that perfect movie. Natalie knows that the “show” and “business” of filmmaking are synonymous, but her boss, the beautiful, ruthless and equally ambitious executive Mona Pearl, dismisses Natalie’s preference for character-driven screenplays as “movies for nobody.” Soon studio intrigue and a tragic film location accident galvanize Natalie into rekindling a hot romance with charismatic producer Benny Gallo, the man she swore she never wanted to see again. Conflicted about the powerful producer and big-time heartbreaker, Natalie nonetheless persuades Benny into producing a soulful “little independent-that-could” film set in Central Coast wine country. Mona, on the other hand, is staking her reputation on the studio’s big budget special effects/action "tentpole" picture. The entire film business appears in upheaval, but Benny Gallo urges Natalie to trust her own ambition, even as he serves to benefit from her “giving good Hollywood.” Is he the devil bargaining for her soul? Her Svengali? Or is he “the man who got away?” As the glitz and glamour of awards season approaches along with the release dates for both radically different movies, as the rivalry between the two women reaches a fever pitch, Natalie realizes she may indeed be risking her soul and even the love of the man she’s always wanted -- all for giving good Hollywood.

A wickedly witty, entertaining and acerbic Hollywood bonbon written from a studio insider's pitiless POV. Author Chris Culler, one of the studio system's corps of invisible and mostly unacknowledged story analysts, cuts tinsel town no slack as she peels off Oscar's golden veneer to reveal the merciless, Machiavellian thrust and parry of Hollywood stars, producers, power brokers and sycophants scrabbling up fame's ladder. We're rooting hard for the few good guys - our heroine, story analyst Natalie Saladay, whose return to the studio snake pit thrusts her reluctantly into the arms of her former lover, Benny Gallo, a greying slightly paunchy, definitely raunchy, and not quite trustworthy producer. It's tough to make a movie in Hollywood these days, especially a good one. Bodies fall hard, and careers plunge like spiky palm fronds in the devilish Santa Ana winds of Hollywood and its bedroom towns of Beverly Hills and Malibu as Natalie and Benny duke it out to make that one, good picture, assisted and beleaguered by a supporting cast of low-lifes decked out in Melrose thrift shop, and high-rollers sipping martinis in Prada.

Readers beware. This ain't your "Us" magazine puff piece. "Giving Good Hollywood" is like biting into a cherry chocolate laced with strychnine. There are parlous few left standing on the golden island of Amalgam Pictures when the credits roll. But if you like a little schadenfreude with your latte, you're gonna love this book.

Giving Good Hollywood edition by Chris Culler Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

No glitzy Hollywood fluff here. In this savvy, wickedly knowing tale of one woman navigating the arsenic-tipped razor wire known as Hollywood, Culler does the nearly unimaginable gives her decidedly below the line heroine a second chance in a town that usually reserves that opportunity for only its loudest and most publicly damaged residents. When 40-something Natalie Saladay returns to a job as a story analyst on the lot where she worked, loved unwisely and abruptly departed from some twenty years ago, it's both a trip down nostalgia lane and a surprisingly new, tough series of challenges for this engagingly real heroine. At a turning point in her own personal life, Natalie navigates her way through the treacherous tinseltown waters brimming with every conceivable kind of fish, from sharks and minnows to wannabe whales, all of whom are 100% believable in their individual ambitions and often back-stabbing actions. Characters interact with the kind of smartest-kid-in-the-room attitude and lightning fast dialogue that will be instantly recognizable to industry insiders and utterly entertaining for anyone who has ever wondered what it's really like behind the tricky pre-production curtain. The deft plot races along as Culler seamlessly blends a fairytale love story with richly developed subplots, surprising twists and pointed insight into the hows and whys of human behavior. This novel is funny, smart and entertaining, and best of all, it proves that being sadder and wiser can actually pay off in unexpected happiness and success.
A joy to read, Giving Good Hollywood pokes fun at the Hollywood studio system where mindless appeals to blockbuster audiences snuff out real stories. Culler's novel is creative and funny, but also poignant in its portrayal of second chances and the hard-earned triumph of "good" Hollywood. Anyone looking for a fun, inside (fictionalized) peek at the movie business will love this book.
This book isn't just a fun addition to the genre of Hollywood novels, but also a boon to women's fiction in general. Culler's smart and savvy tale about a movie studio script reader who's struggling to get back in the game has all the requisites for a bright and breezy ride, including snappy dialogue, an engaging heroine, and plenty of juicy, behind-the-scenes insight from an experienced insider. In a lesser writer's hands, Natalie Saladay's plight as a divorced, single mom who's tempted by a former lover and harassed by a shrewish female boss could have emerged as overly familiar, but there is absolutely nothing clichéd about Culler's writing, which contains just the right touch of satire and keeps us rooting for Natalie every step of the way. Even the heroine's cat - an oft-used prop in the single gal genre - is given a higher purpose and used to help reignite chemistry between Natalie and a charismatic movie producer, Benny Gallo. The witty conversational interludes inserted before cleverly titled sections are an added bonus, as are the spot-on descriptions of L.A. and its environs. I finished this book with high anticipation for Culler's next published effort.
I had great fun reading Giving Good Hollywood while vacationing in Hawaii. The movie industry with all its egos and issues seemed even more distant, and I could relax with a good story and smart writing. Chris Culler interweaved humor with serious personal issues. The story took place in the movie industry but the issues are common to many women dealing with career, motherhood, approaching middle age, love. The woman at the center of the story is unapologetically doing the work she was meant to do, using her strengths to excel at her craft, and to move her profession forward in an industry that doesn't always reward excellence. She has integrity without being naive; she had me in her corner all the time. I'm looking forward to the author's next book.
